Asphalt truck plunges off overpass

A tanker truck plunged over the side of Interstate 44 about 7 a.m. Thursday in downtown St. Louis, creating a spectacle for morning commuters, but only one minor injury to the driver. Vernon McKellips, 62, a driver for N.B. West Construction in Sullivan, said he was driving the empty 50-foot tanker into St. Louis to fill it with asphalt when the vehicle began to fishtail. He said he steered to correct its path and crashed through concrete on the east side of the elevated highway, near Washington Avenue. Video by Jeremy Kohler
